Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet Brings Changes to the Card Game

Pokémon Scarlet & Violet video games were released just this last month and many players jumped into the Paldea region to see all the new things the game had to offer. The Pokémon TCG is set to also start releasing Scarlet & Violet sets next year. With this there are some changes and adjustments to card appearances, pack contents and more.

Silver Border

Going forward the yellow borders that players are used to seeing will be changed to a silver border. This will make the borders match borders that are used in Japan. This will continue to align the card printing similarities globally.

Energy Frame Updates

Energy cards will also see changes in Scarlet & Violet. The name of the energy will be listed in the top of the card to more clearly identify the type of energy the card represents. In addition the energy symbol will also be added to the bottom right of the card. This should make it clearer for each player to see which energy is attached to which Pokémon.

Expansion Codes

Expansion symbols that are usually shown at the bottom left of cards to identify which set a card comes from will be replaced by set codes going forward.

Subcategory Moved

The subcategory of Trainer cards, such as Supporter, Stadium, etc. that are currently located on the top right of the card will be moved to the top left of the card so that it is easier for players to identify the types of cards in their hand.

MSRP Increase

The Pokémon company has stated that due to global inflation and other relevant factors that the Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for booster packs will increase from $3.99 to $4.49. This MSRP increase will take place with the release of the Scarlet & Violet series. In an attempt to help continue a positive pack opening experience and value, each pack will now contain three guaranteed foil cards. All cards that are considered “Rare” or higher will now be foil. They also stated that certain products will come with additional items. The one example they provided was that Elite Trainer boxes will now include an additional booster pack and a full-art promo card.
